The University and the local newspaper, The News, will host debates between MP candidates for the city’s two constituencies in the general election.

The debates known as hustings for Portsmouth South - a hotly-contested Labour seat held by Stephen Morgan - will take place on Tuesday 19 November, and the hustings for Portsmouth North - held by the Conservative former Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt - will be on Tuesday 26 November.

Spaces are limited with bookings on a first come, first served basis:

  • Portsmouth South Hustings - Tuesday 19 November, 6.30pm - 8.30pm, Eldon Building. Book your space.
  • Portsmouth North Hustings - Tuesday 26 November, 6.30pm - 8.30pm, Eldon Building. Book your space.

Journalism students will be reporting from both hustings, producing video reports, audience vox-pops, live-tweets and blogs on the night for the journalism department’s website as well as The News.

If you haven’t done so already, you can register to vote on the Government’s website by Tuesday 26th November. Having your say on local and national issues that affect you is important. It also improves your credit score for the future.

You can register to vote at two addresses (i.e. at home and at university), but you may only vote in one place. There’s also more information online about how this works, and how you can choose to vote by post or proxy if you are unable to attend the polling station on the day.
