Reducing Waste in the Union

Your Union is working on reducing waste with the aim to help you become more sustainable as a student at the University of Portsmouth.

We're working on reducing waste with the aim to help you become more sustainable as a student at the University of Portsmouth. As this is a huge mission we have decided to start with a student must have... coffee! As a busy student on the go, there is nothing better than a piping hot drink to keep you going and the University has plenty of great coffee shops to choose from. But did you know that 16 billion paper cups are used for coffee every single year?! In order to reduce this your Union Shop now sells reusable travel mugs and coffee cups and this comes with the ultimate perk… a FREE hot drink! Which can be redeemed at any of the coffee shops across campus!

If that alone doesn’t convince you here are some more facts that might… in order to make 16 billion paper cups 6.5 million trees are cut down, 4 billion gallons of water is wasted, and enough energy to power 54,000 homes for a year also goes to waste. During the manufacturing process, paper cups are covered with a plastic paste also known as polyethylene. This helps the cup keep your coffee warm, but also prevents the cup from being recycled!

By buying one of our reusable mugs not only will you be saving yourself some money by getting a free drink but you will also help save paper, reduce water and energy waste plus reduce your contribution to landfills! So get yourself down to the Union Shop to get yours today or visit our online store.

Let’s proudly raise our reusable mugs to this!
