Fight Night 6 at the Union
Fight Night success for Boxing Club
Students representing University of Portsmouth and Gym01 Boxing Club took on visiting opponents from Southampton, Essex, Isle of Wight and other boxing clubs in the sixth edition of the Student Unions’ Fight Night series.
The night featured several debut bouts for University of Portsmouth students, showcasing the continuing growth and development of our Boxing Club.
Teammates Ally Zhao and Inas Zack boxed each other, always a tough ask but neither pulled any punches. Head Coach Andrew Moore said: “Ally tried pushing forward more with high workrate and body shots whilst Inas boxed more in the outside using a few phases, angles and straight punches. Inas took the win tonight, and both boxers have my respect for the improvements they have made recently.”
Club President Lucy Ward returned from injury to win her first Fight Night bout against a visiting opponent from Newport, Isle of Wight.
The Best Boxer award was won by Toby Umunna, who came back from defeat in his previous two bouts to win by stoppage in this event.
The night culminated with a super-heavyweight bout between Efehi Obazee and Glen Derrington, with the whole crowd on their feet supporting the boxers. The judges picked this as their bout of the night, as both boxers showed both skill and strength with Derrington, representing Eastbourne ABC, winning by third-round stoppage.
Congratulations to all the winners: Sophie Kemball, Conor Phelan, Natalie Snow, Amber Gregory, Ben Burfit, Inas Zacharia, Louie O’Doherty, Lucy Ward, Alex Zendra, Brandon Spaulding, Toby Umunna, Glen Derrington.
Live amatuer boxing will return to the Students’ Union in autumn 2020, and we host a Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts Showcase on 27th March. Tickets are on sale now here!
