Climate Action

The Union Notes

The vast amounts of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide produced every year has caused the climate to change at a faster pace than it ever has.

The climate commission for UK higher and further education is aiming for 100% institutions to be signed up for the ‘Race to zero for university and colleges’.

In 2019 MPs declared a climate and environment emergency which is being adopted by an ever-increasing number of universities, colleges and sector agencies and bodies.

The Union Believes

Students should make an effort where possible to be sustainable

The Union and, in turn, the University should be doing its best to reduce its carbon footprint

The Union should aim to be carbon neutral and should work with partners and local stakeholders in order to reduce impact on the environment

The Union Resolves

To reduce consumption of unsustainable materials and to switch the environmentally-friendly or sustainable products where practicable

To lobby the University and local partners to cut their carbon emissions and identify areas where they can become more environmentally sustainable

To eventually become Carbon Neutral, if and where possible

Proposed By Victoria Yates

Seconded By Jan Galazewski
