Information for Students
We are your Union
The Students’ Union is an independent charity that exists to advance your education at the University of Portsmouth through a range of exciting services and activities. Our mission is to have a positive impact with every Portsmouth student and according to our students we’re doing a pretty good job at it – consistently we’ve been in the Top 20 Union’s in the country and for the past 3 years are the best on the South Coast (as ranked through the National Student Survey).
In the Union Building
In the Union Building you will find a world of useful services:
There are over 200 student led activities for you to get involved in (whatever your hobby!). We also have an exciting range of annual events from a Petting Zoo to Graduation Ball.
Student life isn’t all plain sailing; that’s why we have our independent student Advice Centre located at the heart of campus in the Union Building. We’re here for you, whenever and whatever the problem.
There’s more to life than just studying so we've compiled a list of local recommended businesses for you, an exclusive house hunting service and a hub to find great discounts and tickets to events in the city.

How we're run
Right to opt out: Should you wish to opt out of membership you must send separate written notice (by writing or in email) to the President of the Students’ Union and the Vice-Chancellor of the University. If you exercise your right to opt out of membership with the Students’ Union then you will remain a non-member, withdrawing all rights of membership, for the remainder of the academic year. If you wish to opt out in subsequent years, you will need to annually write to the president to exercise your right of opt out.
Fees information: Many clubs and societies have a membership cost to cover your participation in group activities. The Union subsidises some of the full member costs for student groups to keep the cost of group membership as low as possible. Associate and affiliate memberships are offered for a small fee (£45), as the Union does not receive any extra funds from the University to subsidise these types of membership. Associate and affiliate memberships (for eligible non-students) are currently only available in person from the Union Shop, upon production of valid of proof of eligibility: For Alumni – A copy of degree/award certificate or a letter from the University of Portsmouth confirming eligibility; For Affiliate students – Affiliate students: Valid student identification, or a letter from host institution, confirming eligibility; For University Staff – Green staff campus card that is in date; and for UPSU Staff – Red staff campus card that is in date.
