This is the election for the position of Democracy & Campaigns Officer in the 2024 student elections. Please see the job description here.

All candidates (including No Suitable Candidate) will be displayed below after the nominations close on the 2nd of February.

This Election is conducted using the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system, meaning that voters will be able to rank candidates in order of preference. You can learn more about the STV system here: Single Transferable Voting.

Voting in this Election will open at 9AM on Monday 19th February 2024 and close at 1PM on Thursday 22nd February 2024.

Results will be announced from 6PM on Thursday 22nd February 2024. You can contact elections@upsu.net if you need any help or support.

Hello everyone, my name is Anwar Jawula, and I am running to be re-elected as the Democracy and Campaigns Officer for next academic year. It has been a pleasure to represent all students and work with great staff members here at the Union. A bit about myself: I was a course rep in first year, then became the Chair of the Student Council, and in third year, I became the Faculty Rep for HSS. After that, I was elected to be the Democracy and Campaigns Officer. As the Democracy and Campaigns Officer, I have worked tirelessly to support students through the Cost of living crises. I have given out free food and stationary products, improved the internet in some university buildings, and improved the university bus system. However, I feel that my job is not yet complete, as I have so much more to offer. That's why, if re-elected, I will focus on the following three initiatives:1. Cost of living: I will lobby the government to increase maintenance loans in line with inflation and bring back the maintenance grant system. This will ensure that students don’t have to choose between working and studying. I will also work with the university to support international students struggling with money and will initiate other cost-of-living programs.2. Union Vibrancy: I will work towards enhancing the student union building by adding a coffee shop, food options, and a student union bar. I believe that every student has the right to express their cultural beliefs, and I will push for more cultural events and clubbing events like the winter ball and independence celebrations. 3, Campaigns for students: I believe in the power of Portsmouth students. If re-elected, I will empower them to confidently run their own campaigns with the help from the union and me.

Do you feel heard? Has previous experience made you feel like you are part of the change? Of the hundreds of surveys, you filled out and petitions you have signed, has there been any evidence to show that your voice has been considered? Does the current democratic structure give your petitions the help and support they need? If not, then you have been let down because your voice should matter, and complacency should not jeopardize your chance of being heard.
With a student population exceeding 30’000, it is vital that the union takes greater steps to keep everyone engaged. NSS data shows that only 5/10 students feel like active participants and even less bother to try and be involved. If we work towards increasing accountability, transparency, and efficiency of the democratic process then your campaigns and petitions can flourish under the support of the Union.
My varied experience as the founder and editor of a Newsletter, founder of 3 STEM societies, head of a mentoring program for underprivileged children and as a Student Voice Assistant at the Union makes me confident in my ability to deliver because I know how to put you first. I will leverage these skills to introduce steering committees, empower existing structures to work better, introduce public performance reviews and complaint dashboards that keep you informed about the status of current campaigns and petitions letting you know what type of support you are being given and how to access it.
My manifesto is my promise to use the role of Democracy and Campaigns officer to build a stronger and more robust union for you. I believe that your vote (if cast for the right candidate) will ensure we fix the union and make it work for you. I look forward to serving you as an officer.
