Without UPSU I wouldn’t have made any friends and I might have dropped out of uni. Luckily that’s not the case and I have made a social network through the clubs and societies you offer here.
UPSU Annual Survey (23/24)Since I am an international student, having societies of countries is the best. The events about different cultures and stuff makes it even better and I feel accepted.
UPSU Annual Survey (23/24)If I was giving advice to me before I started uni, I would tell myself to join a society as soon as possible, make it the first thing you do, especially in your first year. Join as many as you want to, meet so many new people and learn what you are interested in.
LLB (Hons) Law / Postgrad MSc Forensic InvestigationLooking back on this academic year, I can honestly say it has been an amazing experience. Moving to a new country and starting university was challenging at first, but thanks to the Student Union, I quickly found my place. Becoming part of Afro Fusion Society and the Czech & Slovak Group helped me feel at home, and I really enjoyed events like pop-up pantry, stressless fair with therapy dogs, and so many other activities organised by the student union. I’m grateful for all the memories, friendships, and opportunities this year has brought me.
UPSU Annual Survey (25/26) — BA (Hons) International Business Year 1 UndergraduateTo anyone starting University, I would strongly recommend getting involved with the Students' Union. It can genuinely change your life for the better, just as it did for me. Without the SU I don’t I would have made it through university.
Criminology and Criminal Justice Graduate 24/25Really helped me out during a stressful period and talked me through. Never knew that the SU is an invaluable resource until now. Words alone cannot fully express my appreciation. Thank you for being there. I am truly truly grateful!

Student staff 23/24Working at UPSU has given me invaluable experience and career progression. Before starting here, nearly 3 years ago, I had no experience in project or event management but throughout I have been pushed to develop these skills greatly, taking on more responsibility and larger projects. This experience has helped me shape my future career goals and improve my CV and I will forever be grateful for the opportunities UPSU has provided me.
BSc (Hons) Creative Media Technologies — Student Events and Commercial ConsultantThe Students’ Union has provided valuable resources, support, and a platform for my voice to be heard. Overall, it has made my time at university more fulfilling, memorable and enjoyable.
Annual Survey 22/23During my time at the University of Portsmouth, I focused on getting involved in various activities and challenging myself to step outside my comfort zone. I served as a Course Representative for a year and later became the Chair of the Student Council at the Students’ Union. This was a significant responsibility and an achievement I am very proud of.
Elected Officer 23–25Starting my postgraduate studies in Portsmouth has been a rewarding experience. As an international student, I’ve enjoyed studying alongside people from different countries and backgrounds, and those conversations have broadened my perspective in many ways. Alongside the University, I’ve also come to appreciate the role of the Students’ Union. Knowing that there’s an independent organisation whose purpose is to represent students and listen to their views makes a real difference. Completing the annual survey felt like a genuine opportunity to contribute.
