UPSU Climate Strategy

Here at the Students' Union, helping mitigate Climate Change is a big priority for us. We have a team of staff and students that drive sustainability work at the Union and work in partnership with University staff. They are the team that bring you Green Week and other sustainability themed events! They also ensure that all of the Union's work aligns with our sustainability values and commitments. Green Week 2024 took place on 22nd April - 26th April 2024 and was dedicated to promoting sustainability on campus. Its aim was to inspire students to be more sustainable and raise awareness on climate change. It was also a great opportunity to meet some awesome sustainable businesses right here in Portsmouth. Organisations that were involved with the week included: Share Portsmouth, Portsmouth Climate Action, GreenPeace Portsmouth, Share Portsmouth, Unite Students, SwopItUp, Plant-Based Universities, Actually Merlin Vintage, With Extraordinarily Grace, Save the Children, Package Free Larder, Breeze, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Portsmouth Friends of the Earth, Portsmouth City Council and Coconuts Delivery.

Last time, Green Week included an eco market & fayre that included lots of sustainable organisations promoting ways to be more green. There was also the Wheely Good Travel Show where students could learn about sustainable travel, get their bike checked and win prizes themed around sustainable travel! We also had a lineup of speaker events covering climate change and sustainability in several fields from UoP PhD students and UoP staff. As well as this, we ran bitesize carbon literacy sessions run by the coordinator of Portsmouth Climate Action, with assistance from the Sustainability Coordinator at the University of Portsmouth.

UPSU is committed to carrying on with Green Week so keep an eye out for future announcements of Green Week 2025!
