The Policy

Transferring courses or universities is when a student decides they no longer wish to continue their current course or wants to change universities. If there are any issues, the Advice Service would first recommend considering all the options available.

A transfer is not guaranteed, particularly after the first two weeks of the academic year or before the beginning of the next one. You may have to defer entry to the course or university you are transferring to and suspend your studies for the remainder of the current academic year.

Transfer Within The University

To transfer within the University of Portsmouth, you need permission from the department and course you wish to transfer to. You should first speak to your Course Leader to discuss the transfer. The new department will make the final decision on which credits can be transferred and whether you can move over.

There may be conditions attached to the move, such as having essays or readings to catch up on. It is important to ask about these conditions so you are aware of your potential workload in advance.

Once the decision has been agreed upon, you must print and submit the appropriate Transfer Form to your school office.

Transfer To An Alternative University

If you wish to change Universities, you need to first contact the new University to find out if this is possible. You should be able to find contact details on the course page you wish to transfer to on their website.

Some Universities offer Direct Entry, and some will require you to apply through UCAS.

Once a transfer has been confirmed, you will need to notify your head of Department and withdraw from the University of Portsmouth which you can do through your Student View portal.

There may be financial implications of transferring which you will need to consider. The University’s Student Finance department can help you with this. You can contact them via:
