The Socialist Worker Student Society is a revolutionary socialist student society with societies at universities all across Britain. We organise on campuses to fight against oppression, exploitation and environmental destruction. We believe the problems in society come from a system, capitalism, that prioritises profit above all else. We think the solution is a revolution, where the majority of people take control of society and run it from the bottom up without the billionaires, bosses and landlords. We organise on a day-to-day basis by taking part in movements, protests and strikes—and arguing for a revolutionary socialist transformation of society. 

Our Activities

We believe that to make a difference we have to get out onto the streets. When the Palestine movement on campus was at it’s height, we were part of organising the student encampment for Palestine in ravelin park. When vile racists besieged refugee families in the Royal Beach hotel, we helped organise the demonstrations to defend them. When the far right targeted Portsmouth’s trans community, we joined protests in solidarity with them. We want to get the maximum number of people out fighting against the system, and we want students at this university to join us.

Our Organisation

The Socialist Worker Student Society is the student wing of the Socialist Worker’s Party, Britain's largest revolutionary socialist organisation. There is a local branch in Portsmouth and there are branches in almost every town and city in the country. We believe that students alone cannot change the world, and we organise on campuses to support local and national campaigns.

Our Theory

We cannot change the world by sitting in a room and discussing ideas, but our theoretical tradition dating back to Marx and Engels is an essential guide to fighting capitalism. We host open weekly meetings where we not only discuss our activities but also develop our ideas.

Our Campaigns

We believe that the capitalist system and the state is responsible for the exploitation, bigotry, oppression and crises in our society. We believe in human rights and human dignity, and we are at the front of the fight to defend them in every form it takes. We believe that society should be run from below to fulfill societies needs, rather than dictated to from the top according to the need of profit.

 We believe that black lives matter, and that refugees are welcome. We believe in a single, democratic, and secular state of Palestine, that both the two state solution is a lie and Israel is committing a genocide. We believe that imperialism is responsible for the bloodshed in Sudan and the Congo. We believe that trans rights are human rights, and we defend the rights of LGBT people to live free from opression and bigotry. We believe in the social model of disability, and that the thing that bars impaired people from full and valuable participation in society is not their impairment, but the unwillingness of society to accommodate them. We believe that climate change is driven by relentless capitalist competition, and that only a revolutionary change to the logic of the system can stop us barrelling into climate disaster.

Our Internationalism

Internationally, we are part of the International Socialist Tendancy. It is a grouping of revolutionary socialist organisations all across the world, from Germany to Egypt to South Korea, committed to fighting for socialism from below.
