- Posted Fri, Jul 8, 2022 9:37 AM
The day has finally arrived. You’ve spent hours stressing over deadlines, group work, references, and grades. You’ve sat inside writing essays, reports, and studying for exams whilst the sun beats down on your window. You’ve turned up to 9am lectures hungover, regretting every minute of the night before. But it was all worth it for the feeling of graduating.
Yet, all you can think to yourself is…where am I going to take my graduation pic for Instagram?
Well, your Student Union has you covered, as we’ve compiled a list of the top photo locations in Portsmouth, so you can think less about your Instagram, and more about celebrating.
1. The Point, Old Portsmouth
Located in Old Portsmouth, The Point is a beautiful place to take your graduation pics. Not only is there a view of the Spinnaker Tower, Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf, but it is also situated next to two great pubs. Being just a 20-minute walk from the Guildhall, this location is perfect for a bite to eat and a few snaps.

2. Portsmouth Harbour, Station Approach (Opposite HMS Warrior)
At the entrance to the Historic Dockyard, you will find a great view of the HMS Warrior. This spot is 15 minutes away from the Guildhall and is a short walk from Gunwharf, where you can find shops, restaurants, and other photo spots to make your graduation day even better.

3. Gunwharf Quays
As mentioned, Gunwharf Quays offers a range of interesting views and buildings that can make for great pictures. Take one in front of the iconic Spinnaker for that real Portsmouth feel! It takes just over 10 minutes to get there from the Guildhall and boasts a range of bars and restaurants for you to continue celebrating.

4. Canoe Lake, Southsea
Canoe Lake is another area that provides an idyllic setting for some graduation pics. Despite being slightly further from the Guildhall at just over 30 minutes’ walk, Canoe Lake is situated next to Southsea Seafront which can also provide some beautiful seaside snap locations. Who doesn’t want a swan pedalo in their Graduation pictures?!

5. Victoria Park, Portsmouth
Located just 3 minutes’ walk away from the Guildhall, Victoria Park is a great option for some quick graduation pics. Not only does it provide a beautiful setting, with idyllic greenery, but it won’t take too much time out of your day.

6. Hot Walls, Broad Street, Old Portsmouth
The Hot Walls and its surrounding areas have an abundance of photo opportunities for your graduation day. The interesting brickwork of the walls and its close proximity to the Round Tower give you some great options, all of which are just a 20-minute walk away from the Guildhall. Did someone say Golden Hour?

7. Portsdown Hill, Portsmouth
The final graduation photo spot is Portsdown Hill. Despite not being walking distance from the Guildhall, the view is worth the 15-minute drive, as you will be able to see across the city. So, if you do have a spare hour, it’s worth it.
