Following the news that Maizey Annear, your Democracy & Campaigns Officer had handed in her resignation after receiving an aspirational job offer, we wanted to provide you with an update…

We are very pleased to say that Anwar Jawula (who ran for the role in the Student Elections in March) has accepted the role as Democracy & Campaigns Officer and will soon be joining the Elected Officer team. The Union team is now currently working on getting all the formal paperwork completed with Anwar, ready to step into the Officer role and start his term, as well as supporting him to catch up with the other Elected Officers and training they’ve already received.

Anwar will be working on his manifesto points for the 2023-24 Academic year as well as listening to the student voice to improve student’s learning experience. You can view the Elected Officer Manifesto Pack to see Anwar’s and the Elected Officers manifesto points.

How did we decide who would fill the role of Democracy & Campaigns Officer?

After consulting with the Trustees and Returning Officer (RO), the Union decided to rerun the Democracy & Campaigns Officer election, removing Maizey Annear and transferring her votes, to ensure that those that had voted Maizey as their first choice still had their votes counted. We believe this is the fairest way to decide who should be in the role and is the same process we followed when appointing Kajetan to the Learning Experience Officer role.

The results showed that Anwar Jawula was elected as Democracy & Campaigns Officer. The original ballot results and rerun ballot results can be found below. Our RO verified and was happy with this result.

Temi, your Development Officer and Anna, the Union’s CEO have been in contact with Anwar to offer him the role, which he was very excited about and provided his formal response accepting the role via email.

Anwar will start as Democracy & Campaigns Officer Elect on 14th August and will have a couple weeks handover with Maizey before becoming Democracy & Campaigns Officer on 28th August.
