UPSU Response to Unrest in the UK
A statement from your Union regarding the current unrest and shocking displays of racism in the UK.
- Posted Tue, Aug 6, 2024 3:23 PM
The Student Union wishes to reach out to students following the unrest and shocking displays of racism across parts of the UK this weekend and the ongoing speculation of continued acts targeting our city as well as others, which we are working closely with Hampshire Constabulary and the University to gather more information. While we do not want to contribute to fear and speculation, we understand that some students may already feel uneasy.
These displays of ignorance and anger do not reflect the Portsmouth community, which is truly enriched by the diversity of our students and staff.
Portsmouth Students’ Union stands against any form of violence or hate crime and recognises that many of our members may feel anxious or unsafe because of these events. We will always be a safe space for you!
Instances of hate crimes are treated with utmost seriousness. If you become aware of any such incidents on campus, please use the Report + Support tool page to report them. You have the option to report anonymously.
If you are ever concerned for your safety on campus, the campus security team is available 24 hours a day, throughout the year, for both emergencies and non-emergency queries and can be accessed by calling: +44 (0)23 9284 3418
The Student Union Advice Service offers confidential, impartial and non-judgemental support on a range of academic and university issues that may affect your experience. More information can be found here.
Some of our student groups are still active over the summer and will welcome new members that are seeking a positive community environment with like minded people. You can view all our student groups here.
Should you need support for your mental health and overall wellbeing, the University Wellbeing Service is accessible via phone at +44 (0)23 9284 3466 or through email at wellbeing-admin@port.ac.uk. Additionally, other support services, such as quiet spaces for prayer and counsel over a cup of tea, are provided by the Chaplaincy Team, reachable by phone at +44 (0)23 9284 3030 or via email at chaplains@port.ac.uk.
Your Safety and right to protest
We want to assure you all that student safety and wellbeing is our priority and as such we will continue to work with the University and local authorities (including Hampshire Constabulary) to ensure that students continue to feel safe both on and off campus.
We understand students have the right to protest/counter-protest. Our advice would be to only do so in a way that does not break the law, that ensures your safety and the safety of those around you and urge that you consider the following:
- Only attend a protest organised by a recognised group.
- Don’t attend alone – make sure you are with a group of people you know and trust.
- Make an exit plan – as witnessed, even planned peaceful protests can escalate quickly.
- Make sure you have a plan to get to a safe space as soon as you witness inappropriate or illegal activity and call 999 to report it.
- Do not engage directly with aggressors.
- Stay near to police presence.
- Do not engage in any illegal activity
International students can call the The UK Council for International Student Affairs for specific advice.
