Today, on International Volunteer Day, we’re taking a moment to shine a spotlight on the incredible contributions of our student volunteers and leaders at the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union. From championing student voices, to creating inclusive communities, to organising events, these individuals dedicate their time, energy, and passion to make a difference in our community.

Who Are Our Student Volunteers?

Our student volunteers come from all corners of campus, and their roles are as diverse as their talents. Whether they’re part of Student Group Committees or Groups Exec, Course and Faculty Representatives, Student Council or our Student Trustees, they each play a unique part in shaping the student experience.

Here’s a closer look at what they do:

Student Group Committee Members: These volunteers are the heartbeat of our societies, clubs, and networks. They organise activities, manage events, and create spaces where students can connect, grow, and have fun. From activity based groups to cultural societies and more, their efforts make student life vibrant and exciting.

Course Representatives: Course Reps act as the bridge between students and academic staff. They listen to their peers, gather feedback, and ensure that the student voice is heard in shaping the quality of education at Portsmouth.

Faculty Representatives: Going one step further, Faculty Reps represent entire faculties. They work tirelessly to advocate for student needs, tackle challenges, and collaborate with University staff to improve academic experiences.

Student Council Members: As the decision-makers and vision-setters of our Union, Student Council Members play a crucial role in steering the direction of our work. They amplify student voices on key issues, helping us deliver meaningful change.

Student Trustees: Student Trustees bring a unique perspective to the Union’s Board of Trustees, where they help oversee our strategic direction and ensure we’re meeting our goals as a charity. They balance student priorities with governance responsibilities, making decisions that impact the Union’s future while ensuring student interests remain at the heart of everything we do.

Why We’re Grateful

In 2023/24, our Student Leaders dedicated over 52,900 volunteering hours to improving varying areas of your student journey, whether it be through connective community activities like groups or representing your academic interests.

Not only that but last year, Student Groups alone also raised over £7,000 for a variety of charities!

The efforts of our student volunteers go far beyond their official roles. They inspire others, foster a sense of belonging, and make your University and Union a better place for everyone. Their dedication is evident in every event organised, every problem solved, and every student voice amplified.

Get Involved

If you’ve ever thought about stepping up as a volunteer or leader, why not make today the day to explore the possibilities? Joining one of these roles is a chance to develop your skills, meet incredible people, and leave a lasting impact on our community.

According to the NCVO Time Well Spent 2023 report, 75% of volunteers report improved mental health and wellbeing. As well as reporting a great way to improve key skills such as teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving.
