Plant Based Universities Campaign

Outline for our upcoming campaign;

PBU is a student-led campaign for all university catering facilities to transition 100% of their menus to plant-based in order to limit the university’s contribution to the climate and ecological emergency and shift public opinion in favour of a plant-based food system.

A great deal of research coming from Universities such as ours has shown with certainty that we are facing a climate crisis and the biggest driver of this is our unsustainable agricultural system.

The PBU campaign aims to efficiently facilitate the Universities' catering system response to this, Portsmouth can lead by example and proudly become one of the first Universities in promoting this shift towards an ecologically conscious catering system through pushing plant-based options, rather than hindering this change with the options currently available at on campus outlets.

70 Universities have an active PBU campaign and so far, 8 Universities so far have committed to this change, such as Cambridge, Stirling and most recently Warrick, following a student vote.

Over 650 Academics, including some from Portsmouth, and 200 notable environmental experts have signed the open letter to principles to university vice chancellors, student unions, and catering managers calling for this transition.

We are currently assembling a team in Portsmouth to promote the campaign to fellow students, and we will be working with the student union as well as lecturers on this.
