Earth Day 2025

Why does renewable energy matter and what can students actually do about it? This Earth Day, we explore the theme: OUR POWER, OUR PLANET, and the movement towards using renewable energy.

Tuesday 22 April marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, with this year’s theme: OUR POWER, OUR PLANET. The goal? To unite people around the world in committing to renewable energy, paving the way for a healthy, sustainable, equitable and prosperous future.

Why does the switch to renewable energy matter?

Accelerating the shift to renewable energy is one of the most impactful steps we can take for the planet and ourselves. By tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, countries like the U.S. can meet the majority of their energy needs sustainably. Thanks to rapid advances and falling costs, solar panels are now more affordable than many traditional forms of electricity.

Burning fossil fuels releases massive amounts of greenhouse gases, which massively contributes to global warming. In contrast, renewable energy generates electricity with little to no carbon emissions. This shift plays a key role in tackling climate change and reducing the risk of extreme heatwaves, floods and the spread of infectious diseases.

The benefits of switching to renewable energy aren’t just environmental. They are also economic and deeply personal. Cleaner energy means cleaner air and water, which leads to better public health outcomes. Fossil fuel pollution has been linked to heart attacks, respiratory disorders, strokes and asthma. It also has ties to breast cancer, ovarian diseases and adverse maternal health outcomes, due to air and water contamination. Reducing pollution can significantly improve respiratory and cardiovascular health as well as easing mental health stress associated with environmental degradation, climate anxiety and noise pollution.

When people speak up, governments and corporations are pushed to act. Together, we can drive decisions and actions that lead to a healthier, more equitable world. This Earth Day, let’s commit to supporting and accelerating the transition to renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro, tidal or geothermal) for the future we all share.

So, how can you get involved?

  • Walk or cycle whenever possible (it’s good for the planet and your health too!). Around the campus you’ll find pay as you go e-scooters and bikes.
  • Avoid single use plastics by carrying a reusable water bottle, coffee cup and tote bags when you shop. The Union Shop offers a range of reusable items with a cute aesthetic and affordable prices for students.
  • Try Meatless Mondays to help cut emissions from the livestock industry.
  • Unplug your devices! Even in sleep mode, plugged in electronics still consume power.
  • Donate, don’t dump! Give your old clothes, books or tech a second life instead (it helps the environment and people that need it).
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle (it’s a classic for a reason)!
  • Practice mindful consumption by buying less and avoiding impulsive purchases to keep waste out of landfills (and save some cash).

And why not switch to student friendly renewable powered items?

  • Solar power banks and chargers are perfect on the go.
  • Rechargeable batteries reduce waste and can be paired with solar chargers!
  • LED bulbs use way less energy! You could also give solar-powered lamps a try.

These might seem like small changes, but they’re meaningful! When lots of people take small steps, it leads to a big impact.

Earth Day is more than just a date, it’s a movement towards a better future. Let’s own our power, for our planet.
