When you arrive in the UK, one of the first tasks you'll have is setting up a UK bank account. Don't worry—we've got you covered with tips and tricks to make it as easy as possible.
Why open a UK Bank Account?
Safety and Security
Stashing money under your bed isn't a great idea. Banks offer a safe place for your money, so it's not lost or stolen.
For a Part-time Job
Planning to make some money? Most employers pay directly into a bank account. Plus, having a UK account avoids those annoying overseas transaction fees.
UK Based Banking Support
Need some banking help? With a UK bank account, you can pop into your local branch and get support from friendly UK-based staff or speak to the University Student Finance team.
Foreign Transaction Fees
With a UK bank account, say goodbye to foreign transaction fees! Keep more of your hard-earned money.
How to Open Your Bank Account
The Magic 'Bank Letter'
First things first: Generate a 'bank letter' through your Student View after completing your ID check during enrolment. This letter is your golden ticket to a UK bank account.
Documents you'll need:
- Passport or photo ID card - To prove who you are
- Bank letter from the University - Generated through your Student View
- Addresses for the last three years - Track your travels!
- Employment details - If you're working.
- Income details - This could include previous bank statements or payslips.
Patience is Key
Opening a bank account can take up to four or five weeks, so make sure you have enough cash to cover expenses during this time. If you're in a financial pinch, the University's Student Finance Centre is your go-to.
Extra Tips
Each Bank is Different
Every bank has its own requirements and different rewards, so double-check with your chosen bank to ensure you have everything you need and that you find the bank for you!
University Support Fund
If you're facing an unforeseen financial emergency, the University has a support fund to help you. Just show evidence of hardship and proper financial planning.
