Welcome to the Linux User Group (UPLUG), where we empower individuals of all skill levels through inclusive learning, networking opportunities, and advocacy within the tech ecosystem. We are passionate about promoting Linux education, and fostering collaboration in open-source technologies, computer networking, and cybersecurity.

The UPLUG Acronym

  • UP: Represents "University of Portsmouth," identifying the location of the group.
  • LUG: Represents "Linux User Group," the official name of our community, which is part of a larger global network.

Our Mission:

Our mission is to educate, create awareness, and promote the use of Linux and open-source technologies. We support both technical and non-technical individuals in their journeys with Linux, cybersecurity, networking, and more.

Our Vision:

Our vision is to build a community that empowers individuals to explore and excel in technology, encouraging collaboration and sharing of knowledge.

Membership

Membership in UPLUG is free and open to anyone passionate about technology, especially open-source software and Linux, welcoming all experience levels eager to learn and collaborate. Members enjoy unique benefits such as access to tailored workshops, expert-led talks, networking opportunities, and study groups focused on specific tools, resources, and certifications.

What we do

UPLUG hosts regular events, featuring guest speakers or presentations at each meeting, hands-on workshops, and study groups for collaborative projects. Each year, we hold a special event, like Software Freedom Day, showcasing community projects and keynote speakers to celebrate and promote open-source technology.

Who can join us

  • Students: Those studying for certifications in IT, cybersecurity, and related fields.
  • Professionals: Individuals working in IT, networking, cybersecurity, and Linux systems administration.
  • Hobbyists: Curious individuals experimenting with open-source software and hardware.
  • Developers and Enthusiasts: Those with experience in programming and looking to expand their skills.
  • Newcomers: Anyone interested in learning more about Linux and open-source technologies.

Our Meetings

We hold regular hands-on sessions every Wednesday from 3pm to 5pm.  When necessary, we hold In-person Seminars or Webinars on the third Friday or Saturday of every month. Our meetings feature a structured agenda that includes community announcements, guest speaker presentations, Q&A sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities, with meetings hosted in-person at designated venues and available via virtual platforms like Google Meet, Zoom, etc.
