About Powerlifting Society

Welcome to UoP Powerlifting Club!

Here at the University of Portsmouth Powerlifting Club, we guide students to become their strongest self! Our goal is to influence more people in to the sport, and prepare them for competitions. Since starting out in 2021, we have greatly grown our members, some of which that have competed at both divisional and national level under the GBPF (Great British Powerlifting Federation), which is a part of the IPF (International Powerlifting Federation). This year we are aiming to send the biggest number of members to BUCS (British University and College Sports) and represent the university and society at a national level! JOIN US! All abilities are welcome, no experience required!

MEMBERSHIPS

A standard £70 yearly full membership is required to be a part of the UoP Powerlifting Club.

Membership includes:

  • Weekly training session

  • A training program designed by our Head Coach

  • Discounted membership rate at Fitness24 (Gosport)

  • Competition Guidance/Practise

  • Weekly social activities

If you require a more personalised in-depth coaching, you may purchase an additional £15 online coaching membership. This will give you access to our online coaches, which will be able to provide you advice on form, program, weekly check ins and much more.

TRAINING

Our regular weekly training sessions will take place at the new Portsmouth Elite Athlete Centre. There are eight dedicated lifting stations, IPF approved barbells, calibrated lifting plates and much more!

For our less experienced lifters, we can provide guidance and teach them how to Squat, Bench, and Deadlift (Conventional or Sumo). In addition, we will be organising a workout of the day every week that members can follow during the session. This will be supervised by one of our committee members who can keep an eye on you so you don't hurt yourself during the movements.

In similar fashion to previous years, members are able to train freely on their own!

Additionally, we're partnered up with Fitness24 in Gosport for a slightly discounted membership price. These facilities are full of IPF approved competition equipment which can be beneficial to train with, especially preparing for a competition.

Outside of group training sessions, our members train at various gyms around Portsmouth, including Ravelin Sports Centre, Pure Gym, The Gym, City Gym etc.

[COACH] Sam Whale

Sam has been training powerlifting for more than three years, doing it competitively since 2022 and competed on an international platform in France at the European Bench Press Championships. Sam is a Sport and Exercise Science graduate and currently doing his Masters degree in Physiotherapy.
