What's On

At UPSU's Advice Service, we offer confidential, impartial and non-judgemental support on a range of academic and university issues that may affect your experience. Our team of trained advisers are on hand all year round to offer help where it's needed. The independent service works closely with the University of Portsmouth to resolve issues and ensure students are treated fairly.

UPSU are here to represent every student at the University of Portsmouth. We have many ways you can express your student voice, including: our Course Rep system, Have Your Say, Student Council, StART, Hot Topic, Annual Survey, Focus Groups, and more! Welcome to UPSU

Bring back Abroad Placements for SMDE (USA, Europe, Canada etc)

Due to Brexit, the university no longer offers support for abroad placements to SMDE students, however, they do in other Universities and in other courses at Portsmouth, so we ask that we get the same support as other courses in abroad placements.

How Will This Idea Benefit Students?

The engineering and design industry is huge but the community is small, especially in Aerospace and Automotive sectors, students need to build connections in the UK but also abroad in order to optimise their chances of success in the industry. It also offers a chance to experience new culture and explore other parts of the world. Some sub-industries, such as NASCAR, Film, television and some research programmes are not found in this country, so by opening the world to students, so many more opportunities will present themselves.

How Can The Union Achieve This?

Talk to other Universities to see if they use external programmes, email large companies who may offer placements, or DM/PM through social media, and see if they offer placements or advertise on external programmes. There are plenty of programmes out there, it’s just a case of selecting the correct one. Then once the idea is feasible, speak to the elected student body to action it.

A vote was taken with 5 votes to approve and 2 to suspend.
This petition was approved and assigned to elected officer Dom Owen.
Dom will be looking into how this can be implemented.
