Allow Sports Club Under Sport and Recreation to Promote Student Fight Night in aid of Harry Magee

The department of Sport and Recreation have not allowed the promotion of a student event in aid of a student, Harry Magee, following an accident he had resulting in life changing injuries. This petition is to change that decision and allow sports club to promote this event across social media and all future events for Harry’s fundraising.

How Will This Idea Benefit Students?

This will allow more students to see what we are doing for Harry and know how they can get involved and support him and his family. Harry is a very well known student across sports clubs and the university, he’s devoted his time at UOP to helping and raising for others. This is our turn to give back to him.

How Can The Union Achieve This?

  • UPSU Leadership Update

The decision made by the UPSU leadership team in regards to this Have Your Say petition - Allow Sports Club Under Sport and Recreation to Promote Student Fight Night in aid of Harry Magee:

The event organiser has found a venue locally (The Gaiety Bar) and this will take place on the 20th March.

Following careful deliberation by the UPSU Leadership team, consisting of the Elected Officers and Senior Managers, it has been determined that lobbying efforts will proceed, albeit with certain conditions.

As a Union we have agreed to endorse the position taken by Student Council to lobby the University to promote the fight night event with the condition that clubs who are promoting the event state clearly that:

We only support the promotion of the fundraiser. The actual fight night event itself is not approved or endorsed by UoP or UPSU.

This requirement must be clearly conveyed in all promotional materials.

UPSU has again sent an email to lobby for UoP to review their position and align itself with the leadership recommendation. We have once again asked if there can be the opportunity for UoP sports clubs to promote the event with this new condition. We are awaiting a response so at this stage we don’t anticipate any change in stance from the University but we will do our utmost to challenge this.

Moreover, UPSU leadership has agreed that the same stipulation will be extended to UPSU student groups, recognising that they may also have an interest in promoting the event.

We would like to stress again that this decision has not been taken lightly. We have reviewed the risks and feel that the addition of a condition will allow students to feel supported in raising funds for Harry but also limit any damage to both of our organisations reputations.

Please contact Temi directly if you wish to clarify anything or discuss this matter further.
