SCHOOL FEES DISCOUNT(Nigerian International students)

This petition aims to foster discount on our increased tuition fee for 2024/2025 semester year. We Nigerian students paid £15,600 during our first university year (2023/2024) semester as there was a discount on our tuition fee. However, this year, we realized that the discount has been eliminated and we are ask to pay £17,200 a whopping more than 10% increase. This increase is financially daunting for us, our parents, family and supporters due to the stupendously high currency exchange rate as our currency (Naira) is constantly reducing. Therefore, we seek a discount (possibly back to £15,600) for this new term’s tuition fee to enable us meet up with payments.

How Will This Idea Benefit Students?

This increase is creating emotional and mental discomfort among us even when the term is yet to start. And with this financial burden incurred on us, we will not be able to study effectively, we will perhaps not enjoy classes as we used to, also some of us who solely study will be negatively affected by this financial burden because it will force us to start looking for menial jobs which will have negative impact on our study life, distracting us and perhaps make us miss classes. Thus, negatively affecting our mental wellbeing. That being said, Nigerian international students at the university of Portsmouth are seeking for a discounted tuition fee for 2024/2025 semester to enable us and our financial supporters meet up with tuition fee payments on time. Also the tuition fee discount will foster better study condition for us, it will drive focus among us as we will potentially not miss classes giving “I went to work so I can pay my extra tuition fee” as an excuse. Additionally, the tuition fee discount will enhance our mental wellbeing, contemporarily, we are consistently pondering on this increment instead of preparing for resumption. Lastly, the tuition discount will of course facilitate financial burden on our parents, families  and supporters. It will mitigate pressure on them and in the process support their mental wellbeing. This is significant for us (Nigerian International students) as it will help our daily thought process reducing chances of mental health issues or depression. All we seek is a discount that will make us continue to enjoy our study life at the university of portsmouth.

How Can The Union Achieve This?

The Union can archive our goal by communicating our emotional distress caused by this tuition increment to the university of portsmouth. The Union should put to the University’s notice that this tuition fee increase will negatively affect our mental wellbeing keeping us in a devastating state through this semester (2024/2025). The Union have a close relationship with both local and international student so the Union understands how students mental wellbeing or mental health is crucial to their study life. We are writing this in hope that the Union do it’s possible best to ensure that our voices (Nigerian international students) are heard because this discount will support our mental health and enable better study condition for us at the university of portsmouth.
