What is Policy Lapse?
We tell you about our policies and you get to decide what happens next. Do we still believe in them? Or is it time to change them? Maybe now is the time to remove them entirely.

What is Policy Lapse?
We tell you about our policies and you get to decide what happens next. Do we still believe in them? Or is it time to change them? Maybe now is the time to remove them entirely.
When an idea is passed at Student Council through our Have Your Say process the Council identifies if this is a piece of policy. All policies have a lifespan of at least 2 years.
After that 2 year period the policy is put forward to students ahead of a process we call Annual Members Review (AMR). Students can also directly take policy to AMR. These also align with this process
This year there are 7 policies up for review and any student can request for these to be put onto the AMR voting platform.
These policies are as follows:
Have Your Say ideas that became policy in 2021
Items submitted as policy directly to Annual Members Review in 2021
- UPSU Climate Change Action
- Rape & Sexual Assault Awareness
- Motion to ensure appropriate support for students struggling due to international crises
- UPSU to adopt the Social Model of Disability
- Motion to Introduce an Ethical Partnerships Policy and review of the Ethical Investments Policy
The AMR voting platform launches online on Wednesday 29th November 2023 at 9am and remains open until Tuesday 12th December 2023 at 4pm.
If students vote to keep a policy, Student Council will decide how to implement it going forward.
If students reject the policy it no longer remains a policy of UPSU..
If no student brings the policy forward as part of the AMR process in the first place then the policy lapses. This means it also no longer remains a policy of UPSU
So what do you need to do?
Read the 7 policy items listed above - If you feel any of them need to be continued or if you feel the union needs to take further action on them then email anwar.jawula@upsu.net with the name of the policy/policies you want taken to the AMR voting platform.
The Deadline to submit this is Monday 27th November at 10am
Would you like to submit a new policy? - If you are passionate about making a big change then you can submit a new policy.
Before submitting a policy we would encourage you to meet with an elected officer or a member of the UPSU representation team to give you some advice and guidance. If you would like to do this please email representation@upsu.net and we will invite you for an in person or online chat.
The deadline to get in touch and submit a new policy is Monday 20th November at 10am
Keep an eye out for our Annual Members Review that will go live in mid November and then the AMR Voting Platform will go live on the 29th November. This will be your chance to vote on policies that have been put forward
