Activation of Student Union Membership

When you register at the University your membership for that year for the University of Portsmouth Students' Union will be activated!

We are an independent charity that provides academic representation and a whole host of exciting student services during your time at the University.

Being a member means that you get access to:

• Free and impartial advice and representation
• The right to vote who runs your Students' Union
• Access to the Have Your Say platform which shapes your University experience

• Over 100 student groups to join including societies for Disney, Gaming, and Swifties, or Dance, Kickboxing and Motorsport, as well as cultural and religious groups
• Invitations to events like virtual and in-person Freshers Fayre and your ONLY OFFICIAL Freshers' Packs

As part of the activation of your membership we need to tell you some important information about how we use your data. We promise you that our communications with you will be relevant and exciting going forward but we need to do this legal bit first.

Your Data

We take data protection very seriously and work in close partnership with the University of Portsmouth to ensure your information is safe and secure. The University provides us with a register of members to activate your membership and we will collect further relevant information from you when you use our services. As a membership organisation we believe it's a legitimate interest for us to process this data to provide you with the services you need.

Communicating With You

We believe communication is vital in representing you and helping us to deliver the services and information you need. Every month we'll write to you with key information about the University experience and regular updates about events and campaigns that we are running to benefit students. We work in close partnership with a few select partners and because we know University life can be expensive will send you deals and discounts from these partners and our own services. This might sound like a lot but it works out to be about one email from us every few weeks.

Your Rights

We understand that you'll want to tailor what you receive from us and how we process your data. We've set our Data Privacy Information to make it really easy to understand what we do with your data, and your rights, however please note that if you choose to restrict how we process your information we may not be able to provide you with the services and information you need for your University experience. You can manage the communications you receive from us on our easy portal or by clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any email.
